A Dog for All Seasons
I’ve loved to cook since I was a youngster, so it is kind of amazing that I never even considered cooking for our dogs until one of them, Ellie Furoshnikov, became seriously ill in 1999. I just wanted to do something for her! I did a lot of research, and was amazed at how contradictory the nutrition information was. If the "experts" disagreed, how could I be certain that, if I was not actually helping Ellie by cooking for her, I was at least not hurting her? I finally chose to follow a recipe provided by the nutritionist at the local vet school.
I also cooked for our healthy dog, Jamie, because you can't put REAL food in one bowl, dry food in another, and not expect a food fight! Jamie had always been a chow hound, but with home-cooking she actually seemed to enjoy her food and not just inhale it. Her coat, which had never been problematic, thickened and developed an even more beautiful sheen. She smelled terrific, and her breath improved almost overnight.
And so I became a believer in REAL food. Looking back on my initial frenzied cooking for Ellie, I wished there had been some product out there to help me ease the transition and relieve some of the anxiety about making my dogs' food right in my own kitchen. A product to meet the needs of humans like myself, trying to improve the lives of their canine friends, sometimes trying to do so during periods of great stress.
That's how Furoshnikov's Formulas came to be. Our mission was to help people feed their dogs a complete and balanced diet using minimally-processed and preservative-free whole foods!
Now it's time to say goodbye. As the spirit of Ellie said on the home page, there comes a point in every dog's life when it is time to retire to the cabin on the lake. I won't be chasing squirrels up trees, running in the woods with deer, or doing much fishing off the dock, but I and my dogs will continue to enjoy real food made with love.
